Two days after the police identified that the man who surrendered before the court claiming to be the driver of the Audi car might have been an imposter, the owner of the Audi car Dr Manish Rawat presented himself at the Indirapuram police station. Rawat joined the investigation procedure on Sunday night and explained the whole issue to the police.
As per Rawat's statement: "On the night of the incident, he was going to his house in Vasundhara from Safdarjung. It was late in the night and he dozed off a bit too. The driver was driving car and when he woke up, he found the car rammed into something.
He saw his driver fleeing from the spot and went outside to check. The car rammed into an auto-rickshaw and he panicked after seeing people gather around the auto so he too decided to flee from the spot. He took a lift from a person who was standing nearby who dropped him at a place nearby his house."
Rawat also said that his driver doesn't drink and he is totally unaware of what happened that night.
Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, Station House Officer, Indirapuram Police Station said: "The accident happened while overtaking. After finding out that the man who surrendered was an imposter, we issued notice to Dr Rawat. Rawat told us that he was under pressure as the case became highlighted by the police. Soon after the accident, Rawat kept changing his place and stayed in Ghaziabad, Bareilly and his in-laws' home in Urai."
"Dr Rawat presented himself at the Indirapuram police station on Sunday night and we have recorded his statement.
He also came to the police station on Monday as well. As a person has already surrendered himself before the court claiming to be the driver, no case gets registered against Rawat and he thus gets a clean chit in the case. We are trying to identify the imposter who surrendered before the court," added Tripathi.
The whole episode has become a mystery for police, where the accused driver has denied all allegations, saying that he was not involved in the case and his documents have been misused. Being a high profile case, the driver is under huge trauma and he is likely to come to the Ghaziabad court to present his innocence and will file a case against the owner of the car and the person who misused his identity.
