A week after Audi accident, police yet to make headway

Update: 2017-02-05 19:07 GMT
Though a week has passed, there seems to be no progress made by police in the Audi–auto rickshaw accident, which took place in Indirapuram and claimed four lives.

With four families mourning over their loved ones, the culprit behind the accident remains unidentified by Ghaziabad police.

Meanwhile, the owner of the Audi Q7 involved in the accident will appear before the Indirapuram Police to record his statement, police said on Sunday.

"A notice under Section 160 of CrPC has been issued to Manish Rawat, a neurosurgeon at Safdarjung Hospital in whose name the SUV is
registered, asking him to register his statement at Indirapuram police station," Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar said.

There have been indications that the accused are trying to influence the investigation: the offending Audi Q7 has been left in open with no
attempts to collect forensic evidence, with passersby even opening the doors which could compromise forensic evidence.

Police managed to identity Rawat as the car's owner, from the documents found inside the car.

The driver had fled after the accident, leaving the car and the documents behind.

It is to be noted that even after getting all necessary details about the owner of the car, police have not yet determined who was actually driving the vehicle on the night of the accident.

There are other questions cropping up on the probe as well.

Three days after the incident, a person named Ishaq Ahmad from Bareilly, claiming to be the driver, surrendered before the Court. By evening, he was granted bail on personal bond of Rs 20,000 and two sureties of Rs 20,000 each.

Later, it was revealed that the man who surrendered was an imposter and had tried to misdirect the probe.

The real Ishaq, whose documents were presented before the Court, is a truck driver and was somewhere in Assam at the time of the accident.

Meanwhile, police suspect Rawat is hiding at his ancestral house in Agra.

Police are also looking for a fresh start, as they have registered a case of cheating under Section 420 of the IPC against all the people involvedin the production of the man who posed as Ishaq Ahmad.
