DUSIB installs 93 CCTV cameras in 31 night shelters

Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) on Monday informed the Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) about the CCTV cameras that have been installed at night shelters to ensure safety of women and girls there and to keep a strict vigil on the visitors at the shelters.

This is in regard to DCW chief Swati Maliwal's last year's visit to a few night shelters in Nizamuddin, Jama Masjid areas and also near Gurudwara Bangla Sahib where women at the shelters had apprised her of the non-availability of safety measures and other security concerns.

Maliwal had earlier written to the director (night shelter) seeking the details of all women and family night shelters in Delhi along with their full address and capacity.

A notice was then issued to DUSIB last year stating the condition of the night shelters and several anomalies in the security measures of the shelter.

"There are no CCTV cameras anywhere. At the Jama Masjid night shelter, where the DCW team slept, it was observed that friends of the male guards kept pouring in throughout the night," said Maliwal in the notice issued to DUSIB a year ago.

The locals of the shelters had complained about many children going missing, water scarcity in the shelters, absence of female guards and CCTV cameras, very less toilets and that women had no separate toilets. Also, that the male and female night shelters are adjacent to each other in the same complex which is a very big insecurity for the womenfolk.

After several notices issued by the Commission, DUSIB has now informed the DCW that it has installed 93 CCTV cameras in 31 night shelters. Out of these, 57 cameras have been installed at 19 women shelters. The DCW also ensured legal action against the molesters at the night shelter.
