New Delhi: New Delhi parliamentary constituency always remains the centre of attraction for all the major political parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections in the national capital as it is considered as the political powerhouse. The constituency comprises North-Block and South Block, Janpath, NDMC areas, South Extention, Lodi Colony, B K Dutt colony, Safdarjung Enclave, President House, South and North Avenues, Gol Daak Khana, Connaught Place, Panchkuyia Road, RBI quarters and Sarojni Nagar etc. The New Delhi is popularly recognised as Lutyens' Delhi and most of the NDMC areas fall under this constituency.
The New Delhi constituency is the seat from where the national capital got its first woman MP Sucheta Kriplani in 1951. She contested from New Delhi on a ticket of the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party, founded by her husband Acharya Kripalani and had defeated Congress' Manmohini Sehgal, a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Apart from this, the Constituency has been represented and contested by some of the top names in Indian politics including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani, Congress' actor-turned-politician Rajesh Khanna, BJP leader Jagmohan- who won a hat-trick in Lok Sabha elections from New Delhi seat (1996, 1998 and 1999), and Congress leader Ajay Maken.
After Jagmohan's hatrick, Congress leader Ajay Maken emerged as winner from New Delhi seat in 2004 and 2009. Currently BJP's Meenakashi Lekhi is MP from New Delhi seat. In 2014, the BJP candidate Lekhi had defeated AAP's Ashish Khaitan with huge margin.
However in 2015 Assembly polls, the Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party emerged victorious on all the 10 assembly seats which falls under the New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.
The constituency comprises 37 percent government employees. New Delhi has population share of 20 percent Punjabi, 18 percent Scheduled Caste, 10 percent Bania, 10 percent Brahmin and 1.1 percent slum dwellers.
