In order to make MG road free of traffic jams, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and the Gurugram Police have started taking actions against the wrongly parked vehicles at the road.
With lack of parking space being one of the main reasons for the wrong parking of the vehicles, the MCG has also involved the malls at the MG road to tackle the challenge.
To make more parking spaces available, the municipal body has instructed the malls located at MG road to allow free parking of vehicles in their basement. Notices to the malls have been issued by the Municipal body after its recent decision of not levying taxes on basements used for parking purposes.
Officials at MCG highlighted that since no taxes are levied on the basement parking in the malls at MG road, they must allow free parking of the vehicles.
"Malls at MG road can play an important role in reducing the traffic congestion in the area. Since the MCG is not levying tax on basement parking, the malls can allow free parking in their basement. We have observed that most of the owners normally park their vehicles for an hour.
The malls can definitely allow the vehicles to be parked in their basement for that much time. If the malls charge the vehicles for basement parking, the MCG will have to levy tax on the malls for the same," said a senior official from MCG.
"The MCG has also directed the malls to display the number of vehicles parked in their basement so that the right status of parked vehicles is visible to all. Even as most of the malls will help MCG in this initiative, there can be certain establishments which may not allow free parking," added the official.
"It's an excellent initiative by the MCG to allow malls free parking in their basement. A lot of unregulated parking areas have come up around the metro stations and the malls on the road charge an exorbitant parking fee from the vehicle owners. The MCG will have to ensure that they make this initiative a success," said Rajan Bhargava, a city resident.
"Besides this initiative, the MCG and the Gurugram Police must also take action against a lot of commercial vehicles that are wrongly parked at the road. This will further improve the situation of traffic at MG road," added Bhargava.
