New Delhi: The national Capital, between 2016 and 2018, witnessed several cases of matrimonial disputes registered by Delhi Police, in which investigations were initiated and arrests were made.
Millennium Post accessed Delhi Police data between January 2016 and May 2018, for all cases filed under sections 498 (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.
The data stated that so far this year, 136 persons have been arrested. Last year, the number of arrests under these sections was more than 1,000, whereas in 2016, the city police apprehended 828 persons who were found involved in both the sections.
The data shows that 2016 witnessed the higher number of cases reported under the two sections, which were around 3,877. In 2017, there was slight decreased, with 2,745 cases were registered. The current year, till May, saw more than 1,000 cases being registered.
The Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC) of Delhi Police deals with cases filed under the aforementioned sections.
The main aim of the unit is to safeguard the rights of women and children in the national Capital.
It also investigates cases related to dowry and other crimes against women, primarily matrimonial disputes. If a case comes to the unit, it first counsels the couple, so that non-violence, gender equality and harmony in the family prevails.
For the safety of women in the Capital, Delhi Police has from time to time come up with several initiatives.
This includes the Himmat App, a mobile application that allows users to send distress calls to the Police Control Room and their relatives, in the event of an emergency.
In 2015, Delhi Police was alerted over 5,000 times via SOS messages, whereas in 2016, more than 2,000 SOS messages were sent.
Last year, more than 5,000 SOS alert were made to the city police.
The SPUWAC also gives self-defence training to women and girls, so that they can protect themselves from any dangerous situation.
Over the years, several cases have been reported of domestic violence from various parts of the Capital. Organisations like the Delhi Commission for Women has also brought such cases to the light before cops.
