New Delhi: "I felt very happy after I cast my vote for the first time," said 62-year-old Ganesh, a homeless man living in the shelter home in New Delhi area. Not only Ganesh, but there were many homeless who voted for the first time in the city.
Ganesh said that he had no idea about the importance of voting but later he realised the necessity of voting. He lives in Delhi from several years. The 32-year-old Sarwan Mishra, another homeless said that he voted for the first time.
"I am living in the city from the last two years. My first vote went to the candidate whom I think will help my children in education and also provide us home," said Mishra. His wife also voted for the first time.
Another homeless man said that he had voted for development.
"Through voter identity cards we will be recognized as part of the country," added homeless people.
With the help of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and NGOs, these homeless people got identity.
"We have been involved from last five months for their voter identity cards," said Manjeet an NGO official in New Delhi area. DUSIB official Bipin Rai said that special camps were organised for homeless people.
