Lying defunct for 4 years, Bandhwari waste treatment plant to resume operations soon
Lying defunct for four years as a waste treatment plant, the Bandhwari landfill site may soon resume operations of converting energy from the waste.
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram and the Urban Department of the Haryana state Government have
contracted a Chinese green energy company Eco Green energy for converting energy from the waste at the landfill site.
According to sources, certain minute details are being worked upon and the Chinese company will soon resume its operations at the landfill site. Chinese green energy company will coordinate with the officials of MCG in collection and treatment of garbage.
"For long the public officials in the city have been facing the barrage of criticism from the green activists for not setting up a waste treatment plant at the landfill site," said sources.
A case has also been filed against the MCG in National Green Tribunal for not effectively segregating and recycling the waste at Bandhwari landfill site.
Large amounts of garbage are being dumped daily at the landfill site from Gurugram as well as Faridabad. There are over 90 trucks that come daily and dump garbage at the 30-acre landfill site.
Commissioned in 2008, Bandhwari landfill nestled in the green belt of Aravallis site was created with an objective of segregation and recycling of waste generated from Gurgaon as well as Faridabad.
Set up with an investment of 300 crores the investment the objective was to operationalise a power plant and plastic recycling at the site.
However the plans did not materialize and 2013 citing heavy losses, the contractor Irfan Furniturewalla Hanjer abandoned the project of recycling the waste of the area.
Four years since then since then even as the officials claimed there were lot of negotiation with other contractors there was no progress. Meanwhile, the green activists have alleged that officials at MCG were trying to extend the area of
Besides the green activists, villagers close to the landfill site have often complained that how the vast amount of garbage piled up in the area is causing a health hazard for residents nearby.
The villages close to the landfill sites have cited that how the groundwater of the area has become contaminated and thereby causing water borne diseases to most of the residents nearby.
