New Delhi: Delhi to get its first hub with amenities to treat patients with mental illness by November this year at Lampur. The project will require Rs 110 crore. The Social Welfare Department is working on this project and this hub will have a medical centre along with a skill-based training centre for the inmates. "At this hub, all the inmates from the four Delhi government homes for patients with mental illness would be brought together. This would become the largest home complex in Delhi with the facilities to treat and take care of such patients," Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam told Millennium Post.
Earlier, the Social Welfare Department used to run beggar's home at this area but after the Supreme Court declared begging illegal the department planned this hub. The Delhi government has four
homes with facilities to treat the people with mental illness across Delhi. "We want to give the facilities to these people
and nearly 1,500 inmates would be staying at this hub. We will provide high-quality
facilities to the inmates," said Gautam.
The Public Works Department of the Delhi government is setting up this complex. "Right now the project is under the Chief Engineer of the department who is scrutinising the details of the project thereafter tending will be floated for the project. I have set up a deadline for the project and ordered that by October end of this year the facility should be ready for the public. On November first week we want to inaugurate this hub," said the Social Welfare Minister of Delhi.
Meanwhile, as the four existing centres will become empty the Delhi government has a plan to set up training centres at those places. In these training centres, the government would give training to the students who want to work for people with mental illness. "This structure will benefit us in the future because we will have an in-house system of training the students who will be appointed to take care of the people at the hub," said Gautam.
The minister also said that the earlier government led by the Congress planned the same kind of project with nearly Rs 300 crore estimate. "I did not approve the project because the money was much higher. We can give much better facility at a much lower cost, therefore, we planned this new project," said the minister.complex to have medical facility & skill training centre.
