Gurugram: Saturday proved to be yet another disastrous day for slum dwellers in Gurugram, as a cylinder blast gutted 150 shanties. Not only did the mishap leave hundreds of people homeless, it also incinerated the belongings and identity papers of many.
The incident comes weeks after a fire incident at Tigra, which also claimed a life.
Worried over the issue of repetition of such incidents, the public authorities have served strict warnings to the land owners.
The vacant area of village landlords is used for setting up of shanties and Gurugram authorities have also begun taking stringent against illegal encroachments in public areas.
Sprouting of slums have become a major challenge in Gurugram. This is not for the first time when such tragedies have occurred in Gurugram.
Earlier too, there have been massive infernos reported from slums of Sikanderpur and Sector-10. In the case of Sikanderpur, the tragedy occurred twice in quick succession. A six-year-old boy lost his life.
With growth in population, the number of slums in Gurugram has also risen over the years.
Vacant areas and forest areas of Aravallis are being used for setting up shanties. The problem is also reported from areas of old city. The public authorities for long have been making claims to have provided better facilities to the people in these areas.
