Freelance female journalist molested, stalker arrested

Ghaziabad: A 38-year-old freelance woman journalist working with international media houses has allegedly been molested by a stalker who followed her for nearly an hour while she was on the way to her home on Friday night. Cops said that the accused, who was travelling in a car, tried to stop her on the way and passed lewd comments on her when she tried to resist.

As per reports, the incident was reported around 10 pm on Friday near Shipra Suncity society in Indirapuram area of Ghaziabad.

Geetanjali Malhotra, victim's sister, in her complaint told police that her elder sister has allegedly been molested by an unidentified stalker when she was on the way to her home from work.

"The accused followed my sister for nearly 45 minutes and several times he tried to stop her rickshaw on the way. When she retaliated the accused passed lewd comments on her but she kept moving. However, when she reached at gate number 6 of Shipra Suncity society, she informed me over a phone call and alerted the guards. Immediately I rushed to the spot and a police PCR call was made. The accused was inebriated and misbehaved with us when we tried to resist. He then tried to flee the spot but the guards caught hold of him and he was handed over to police," said Malhotra.

According to police, the accused has been identified as Nishant Kaushik, a resident of Shipra Suncity society of Ghaziabad and he works with a private company in Noida.

"Based on the complaint received, an FIR under IPC sections 354 D (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 has been registered at Indirapuram police station of Ghaziabad. The accused has been arrested by police and sent to jail while his car has also been seized by police," said Sandeep Singh, Station House officer of Indirapuram police station.

The victim is a freelance journalist with a few international media houses in US, Canada and other countries and was in India to cover the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
