Gurugram: The special task force (STF) busted a four-member gang that had allegedly robbed several banks of lakhs of rupees by tampering with ATM machines. All accused are residents of the Pinagwan block of Mewat and the police suspect a large number of villagers to be involved in the fraud.

The accused would open fraudulent accounts in various banks, get ATM cards and would take people's ATM cards on rent. They would then go to ATM booths to withdraw money. The moment they would hear a machine counting notes, they would disconnect the electricity supply to the machine. They would then re-plug it and take the money. Meanwhile, they would call customer helpline of bank, complaining about "faulty withdrawal", saying though the money was deducted from the account, it did not come out of the machine.
