New Delhi: Forensic evidence gathered from an old car and analysis of call detail records (CDR) helped police solve a two-month-old case of killing of a woman and led to arrest of an advocate, police said on Wednesday.

On July 1, the body of a woman was found with cut and strangulation marks in northeast Delhi's New Usmanpur, a senior police officer said.

Initially, the woman could not be identified. After scrutinising missing people's reports filed in this district and neighbouring districts, a complaint about a missing woman lodged in Karawal Nagar in northeast Delhi matched with the victim, he said. Subsequently, the victim's family members of the deceased were called and they confirmed her identity, the officer said.

The police then scanned the CDR of the woman and found that she was in constant touch with an advocate.

The woman had spoken to the advocate several times, which led police to suspect his involvement in the matter, he added.

Multiple police teams, along with a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), carried out a raid at the advocate's residence on Tuesday, but found nothing concrete.

However, police came to know that the advocate owns another house and the police teams then raided it.

"The forensic team, comprising Manish Gupta and Prakash Chandra, saw an old car parked inside the house. They suspected that the car was used and washed recently," a source said.

Forensic experts usually can trace blood spots long after a vehicle had been washed, the source.

"The floor mats of the car and the backseat of the car had blood spots that were seen through certain instruments. The forensic team took the samples for testing. They will carry out a DNA test of the samples," the source added.

"Other evidences were also found which have been seized by the FSL," the official said.

On the basis of blood stains in the car and some other evidences which helped them zero in on the advocate as the accused, the officer said.

The accused, identified as 42-year-old Giri Chand, an advocate, was arrested on Wednesday from his residence, said the officer. Cops revealed that the accused and the victim were having an extra-marital affair and were known to each other for over two years.
