In order to curb the racial tension in Greater Noida, Sharda University is organising a football match between African and Indian students on Wednesday.

The match is planned with an aim to defuse the tension between the two communities.

The racial tension in Greater Noida erupted after the attack on few Nigerian students by the locals.

The exciting match is fixed to begin at 4pm in the evening. The football match will be attended by representatives of district administration and diplomats from the embassies of various African countries.

The two teams contesting will have a mix of African and Indian students. While the Indian students will sing an African song before the match, the Africans will also make their presence felt by singing a Hindi song.

According to a spokesperson from Sharda University "The match is organised in order to promote harmony and better relations between the communities. There are over seven hundred African students in Sharda University. We have followed the directions from district magistrate who asked all educational institutes where African students are enrolled, to host cultural events and ethnic programs in order to build up a healthy relation between the two communities."

"We are hopeful that such cultural activities will make the situation normal again. We are happy with the efforts made by the administration.

Earlier we were terrified due to the racial violence but as the days have passed, the Africans students in Greater Noida have resumed their normal life to an extent" said Zaharaddeen Mohammad, National Academic Coordinator, Association of African students in India.

Greater Noida is home to around 4,000 students from Africa who are enrolled in various private universities in the national capital region.

The racial tension in Greater Noida began after a 17-year-old Indian student allegedly died due to drug overdose.

The local residents alleged that the drug was supplied by Nigerian nationals.

Following that, a mob attacked few African students in Greater Noida, which plunged the tension in the city to a situation similar to curfew.

Taking cognisance of the escalating tension, the police and the administration turned strict and worked hard in order to bring the situation back to normal.
