Diabetes emerges as major cause of kidney ailments

New Delhi: With unhealthy lifestyle contributing to multiple diseases, the kidney ailment has emerged as one of the major health complications. Apart from the different factors, diabetes has emerged as a major cause of the Kidney disease plaguing a major chunk, however, Delhi itself witness around rise in cases of Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD) with 10 to 15 per cent of adults in the city.

According to doctors, Diabetes injures the small blood vessels in the body which prevents the kidneys from purifying the blood properly. Many people with diabetes also develop high blood pressure, which is also a leading cause of renal damage. The patients with such problems may also find difficulty in emptying the bladder. The pressure resulting from this condition can injure the kidneys. Also, if urine remains in bladder for a long time, it causes infection due to the rapid growth of bacteria present in urine that has a high sugar level.

"Some of the leading factors causing kidney diseases include diabetes, excessive use of painkillers and ayurvedic drugs, homemade remedies, urine infections and high blood pressure. People should also take care of their diet and avoid over use of non-vegetarian food, protein shakes and fast food items which have high sodium content," said Dr Ravi Bansal Senior Consultant Nephrology, at private hospital.

According to National Health Mission, one in ten people are affected by kidney ailment. Doctors also say the metabolic imbalance is also responsible for high levels of salts and minerals in the urine which later crystallizesand leads to kidney stones and kidney damage.

Meanwhile, doctors have also urged the government to take a strict stand on over the counter sale of pain killers. Dr Bansal further added, "The government should take a stand on over the counter sale of pain killers if it is concerned about the people's health or there should be measures that pain killers are sold only through prescription."

Most kidney patients with diabetes do not have any

symptoms. So if you are a diabetic then you must get a

health checkup to determine the health of your kidneys. Presence of high blood pressure in less than 40 year age and swelling of legs are early signs of

kidney disease. Simple tests like urine routine and serum creatinine are enough to detect presence of kidney disease in most people.

Kidney damage from diabetes can get worse over time. However, one can take steps to slow the damageprocess. Kidney failure occurs when the organs functioning drops to less than 15 percent of the normal.
