NEW DELHI: Amitava Chakraborty, Dean of Delhi University’s Faculty of Arts, resigned on Monday after allegedly being heckled by a group of students, led by DUSU president Ronak Khatri, over a delay in a general elective exam.

Khatri accused Chakraborty of abusing students and staff, and claimed he was intoxicated, a charge Chakraborty denied.

The protest occurred after the exam, scheduled for 9:30 am, was postponed due to a “miscommunication.” In a video, students were seen surrounding the dean in his office.

Chakraborty resigned under pressure, citing a physically threatening environment and emotional distress. He was hospitalised, with a medico-legal report confirming he

was not drunk.

Students later filed a police complaint, and Chakraborty said he might consider legal action for defamation. No immediate response has been received from the Vice-Chancellor or South

Campus Director.
