NEW DELHI: The green bodies of Delhi and the experts have urged the Delhi government to impose all conditions under the severe category of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), by EPCA. They have also urged for a constructive plan to stop crop burning and suggested people to use air purifier which will make the indoor air cleaner.
"Currently, Delhi and its neighbouring region are seeing almost still conditions at the ground level, but in the upper atmosphere, there are two wind masses – one from Punjab, which is bringing pollutants from crop burning and the other from eastern UP, which is bringing moisture. These are colliding at the higher altitude. This is leading to conditions where there is both moisture and pollution as well as no wind at the ground level," explained A Sudhakar, Member Secretary of Central Pollution Control Board.
Agreeing to his statement, Sumit Sharma of TERI University suggested that to avoid reaching emergency situations at a first place, we need scientifically developed medium-term air quality management plans to control emissions from different sectors which contribute to air pollution in Delhi-NCR. However, being in emergency situations now on a yearly basis, we need specific emergency response measures to cut down certain activities and take adaptive measures to reduce exposure to the residents.
