Delhi University will reserve ten seats this academic session for students, who represented the country in international sports, and give them direct admission in its colleges.

The varsity 5 per cent of its seats reserved seats under sports quota, and around 13,000 applicants had enrolled for these seats. Applicants go through several rounds of trials to get selected for these seats. However, some are given direct admission.

According to the DU Sports Council guidelines, there is a provision for the students who have 'represented India in international games', such as the Olympics, World Championships, World Cup, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Asian Championships, South Asian Games and Paralympic Games.

The ten students/sportspersons who will get direct admission this year include parathlete Rinku, who represented India at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, and shooters Asees Chhina, Diwakar Yadav, Fateh Singh Dhillon and Simran Preet Kaur, who were part of the ISSF Junior World Cup held in Germany last year.

"These are the highest tournaments for sports as recognised by the government of India. We are trying to honour their performance and achievements. Their participation (in these tournaments) is not just an honour for them, but also others," said Anil Kumar Kalkal, director of the DU Sports Council.

Bhowneesh Mendiratta and Manavaditya Singh Rathore, who represented India in the International Junior Shotgun Cup Finland last year, have also been given admission.
Another shooter, Lakshay, who participated in the 13th Asian Championship in Kuwait 2015, and Vidhi Jain, who participated in the 9th Asian Air Gun Championship in Iran in 2016, are among the sports person eligible for direct admission in the DU.

"These students can get directly admitted to those DU colleges which offer their particular sport," explained Kalkal.

Meanwhile, a University official stated that cricketer Pawan Negi, who plays with the Royal Challenger Bangalore in Indian Premier League and was a part of the Indian T20 team in 2016, had also applied under the sports quota to get admission.

However, due to technical glitch in uploading documents, he will participate in the sports trial to score a seat in the University.

"According to the uploaded certificate, he has participated in Vijay Hazare trophy, which is a national-level sport. We are bound by guidelines and the provision of document requirements. So, he will have to participate in the DU trails," said Kalkal.
