In yet another accident involving pavement dwellers, an out of control car ran killing two people and injured two others who were sleeping under a bridge in North Delhi's Kashmere Gate area on Saturday.

The injured have been shifted to a local hospital, while the police have arrested the driver who is reportedly a guest teacher at a local school.

A constable present at the spot managed to apprehend the driver, identified as Harish Kumar, after a brief chase.

A senior police official from North District said that Kumar works in a government school in Yamuna Vihar.

On Saturday, he had borrowed his uncle's Etios car for a personal work in Faridabad.

"After he finished his work, he was returning to Delhi from Rajghat area and had reached Monkey Bridge near Kashmere Gate. He lost control of the car and climbed a pavement where four people were sleeping. All of them came under the wheels," said the official.

Police had taken the statements eyewitnesses, who claimed that the car was out of control. "The whole car was damaged. The driver had completely lost control and rammed it into the pavement. Two of them died at the spot. We had called the police and the injured were shifted to LNJP hospital," said Ashok Sharma, an eyewitness.

The injured have been identified as Deepak and Rashid. Police are yet to identify the deceased and are approaching vagabonds in the area with photographs of the deceased for any clues.

Police have registered a case under appropriate sections of the IPC and started investigating the case. "He (Kumar) does have a driver's licence. We are also trying to ascertain if he was drunk during the time of the accident," the official added.

In a similar accident in April this year at Kashmere Gate, a pavement dweller was killed and three others injured when a speeding i20 car – being driven by a Class XII student – lost control and climbed up a pavement.
