Delhi Police introduces 11 new advanced 'Interceptors' to curb over-speeding

 The next time you drive recklessly on the streets of the city, immediately, a traffic challan with a photo of your vehicle along with the GPS location will land at your doorsteps. The Delhi Police have introduced high tech interceptors in its fleet.

To rein in the menace of overspeeding in the National Capital, Delhi Traffic Police on Wednesday launched 11 new interceptor vans which can track speeding vehicles through laser-based cameras night vision cameras not just during the day but also during the night. 

These BSIV emission standards complaint interceptor are capable of intercepting overspeeding vehicles in the range of 0-250 kmph."With these interceptors which can also operate in the night, the police hope to increase the number of challans and also bring down speed related road fatalities. Nearly 52,000 challans have been issued for overspeeding in 2017," said Garima Bhatnagar, Joint CP Traffic.

Flagging off these interceptors at the India Gate lawns, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulaya Patnaik said that the new system will add teeth to technology based prosecution. The laser-based cameras fitted in these vehicles can generate a challan in two seconds and identify a speeding vehicle in a lane full of vehicles. They can work in all light conditions and produce a photograph of the speeding vehicles registration number plate with its GPS coordinates, time and place. 

Explaining the new system and the need for it, Ajai Kashyap, Special CP Traffic said, "The specialty of is that it is a laser-based system which can work day and night. It will instantly identify the speeding vehicle even among various vehicles and provide its photograph which can even be produced as evidence in the court. The GPS coordinates, date and the place where the challan was issued will be mentioned in it."

The Delhi Police has already introduced eleven interceptors in 2014. The additional fleet would add more valour to the already existing force with more advanced technology.
The cops believe that the interceptors might induce deterrence in the speeding motorists as its very difficult to dodge the hawk's eyes of the interceptors.
