Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, chairing a meeting of Task Force on Women Safety here on Tuesday, asked the officials concerned to ensure GPS availability in all public transport vehicles and to work towards the common cause of a Delhi that is safe for women.
He also directed them to install High-Mast lights especially in parks and around public toilets to illuminate dark spots.
On the issue of illuminating darks spots, the officials concerned informed that about out of 1,000 darks spots, 7,000 such spots have been illuminated with street lights. Remaining 3,000 darks spots would be equipped with streetlights by July-end in South corporation area. Illumination of the dark spots in the municipal jurisdiction of EDMC and NDMC, the PWD has undertaken the work, as the officials concerned said. It has already completed the 80 percent of works and the rest of the work will be done by PWD shortly.
The meeting was attended by various welfare departments and officers of Lt. Governor's Secretariat. Baijal further directed that proper installation, and O&M of GPS devices in public service/public transport vehicles, and installation of CCTV cameras in DTC & Clusters buses be ensured.
With regard to making Police Helpline & Women Helpline more effective, it was informed by Spl. CP (Women & Safety) that four advertisement campaigns were undertaken in addition to release of booklet by Commissioner of Police, Delhi containing various information on the women safety issues
An in-house periodic analysis is also undertaken by Delhi Police regarding its efficiency. A third party audit would also be done in this regard to ensure transparency.
Pr. Secretary (Home) informed that certain issues under the Delhi Poison Possession Sale Rules are to be settled regarding Open sale of acid in wholesale market.
Commissioner (Excise) apprised Lt. Governor that regular enforcement drive is being carried out and penal action has been taken in cases of violation especially regarding vends/restaurants serving liquor to under-aged persons.
FIRs against two restaurants have been lodged and license of three restaurants has been suspended. CCTV footage is being used to identify violation of Excise Rules and after examination suitable action is being undertaken.
The LG desired that such enforcement activities be continuously undertaken and deterrent action be taken against violators.
Finally, Baijal again emphasised that all stakeholders must ensure a focused and coordinated strategy to make Delhi a safe city for women. Stressing on the need for a change in mindset as well, he directed the departments to keep up their efforts on generating awareness and sensitisation.
