Rising cases of brain tumour recorded in Capital

Brain tumour which is third leading cause of death is spreading its tentacles in the capital Delhi.

Shockingly, every fourth patient comes to AIIMS neurology outpatient department are suffering from this melanoma of brain. "Today, I have nearly 13 appointments at my OPD and in which approx three patients are suffering from brain tumor," said Dr. Manoj Phalak, Assistant Professor, Neurosurgery, AIIMS. He also added, now people are very much aware of their body and that's the reasons, we are registering a big figure in our hospitals.

Approximately 50,000 to 1,00,000 patients suffer from brain tumor every year in India. Moreover, around 2500 kids are newly diagnosed case of brain tumor every year in India.

Dr Anita Jagetia, Professor, GB Pant hospital, informed that use of mobile phone may increase this high risk of 1.65 times than normal population. However, the continuous use of plastic and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) may increase the threat even further- because a chlorinated compound in these materials has carcinogenic property. She also added that early symptoms can be a common headache, fits, impaired hearing, decrease vision or dysfunction of body parts. 

It generally comes slowly and progresses over months before the diagnosis is established. However, children are more prone to brain tumors in the lower part of the brain as compared to adults in upper brain.

Dr. Kishore Singh, Head of Oncology, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital informed that radiation in malignant tumors is much safe these days that ever before.

He also informed that Chemotherapy has also changed significantly for a better outcome, however, these are costly even now. Several patients asked a relevant question related to their tumours and expressed their satisfactions in their treatment at Pant hospital.

Every year June 8 is designated as World Brain Tumor Day. It is a relatively new activity with this name that started only in the year 2000.Diagnosis

Computed tomography (CT) scan and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are mainstays in the diagnosis, however, PET scan are sometimes used to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment is essentially surgery which is safe and is now yield as good results as any other surgery.
