The third accused in the brutal gang rape of a 19-year-old woman and murder of her nine-month-old infant in Manesar was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Jaikesh, was arrested from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday morning. With him, all the three accused have been arrested in the Manesar gang rape case.
Yogender was the first to be arrested from Bas Kusla village in Manesar on Wednesday afternoon, following which Amit, the second accused, was held at Delhi-Gurugram border at around 6:30 pm the same day.
After the arrest of Jaikesh, the Gurugram Police issued a statement saying absconding third accused in the Manesar gang rape case has also been arrested. The focus now will be on victim rehabilitation and quality evidence gathering. No efforts will be spared towards bringing justice to the victim, it added.
On the night of May 29, under the influence of alcohol, Yogender, Amit and Jaikesh allegedly took turns to rape the 19-year-old girl. They killed her infant daughter in order to make her stop crying.
The arrests of the three accused come at a time when questions were raised on the working of Gurugram Police in handling the Manesar gang rape case.
The Gurugram Police Commissioner in his interaction with the press on Wednesday had admitted that there were lapses in handling the case and stated that rectifications were being made.
Rekha Sharma, a member of National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday also visited the Gurugram Police Commissioner to inquire about the progress made in the Manesar gang rape case.
