Following the revelation of a major kidney racket operating in the national Capital, the Delhi Police Crime Branch on Monday recorded the statement of a nurse from Batra Hospital who named the doctors that had reportedly bypassed standard procedures and exploited loopholes in the medical tests and paperwork, said sources.
According to sources, the nurse named at least five doctors from Batra Hospital whose role seemed suspicious and all of them have allegedly overlooked the laws in the organ transplant.
"The nurse got suspicious after she heard the accent of Jaideep (proxy Donor) and even told the doctors regarding it. As the recipient of the kidney was a South Indian and the rules in the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 say that only near blood relative could donate the organ, the gang of middlemen even worked on Jaideep's accent (proxy donor)," said sources.
The main accused, Jayant Sahoo has also revealed the names of several doctors in Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai during the investigation.
The investigators will now scan the role of the doctors. "This could be a tip of the iceberg in the organ transplant racket that has spread its tentacles all over the country," said investigators.
Sources told Millennium Post that doctors from a reputed private hospital in Delhi have been served notice to join the investigation.
The cop team is carrying out raids in Hyderabad for a middleman who used to scout for needy families looking for kidney donors.
"They are looking for one such, Venky in Hyderabad. He works at a pharmacy and guides patients who need kidney donors to his accomplices in Delhi," added sources.
The crime branch along with a 23-year-old MBA student, Jaideep had busted a racket after the student posed as a donor to dig deep into the racket.
The cop had used spy devices. Jaideep was also linked up with a TV channel by the cops who recorded the entire process from his meetings with the
middlemen to his screening process at the hospital.
