A wanted criminal involved in a murder case in Mukherjee Nagar was arrested by Delhi Police late on Sunday.

Sombir alias Cheli was arrested from PVC Market in Tikri, after a brief scuffle with the police. He tried to open fire at the raiding team, but was overpowered by Head Constable Vijay Kumar and Constable Jai Kishan. A sophisticated Italian-made pistol, loaded with five live cartridges, was recovered from him.

Sombir was wanted for his involvement in the murder of Amit, a Haryana resident, in Mukherjee Nagar. A senior police official said: "Sombir's associate Umesh and Amit belong to the same village. Umesh's uncle was murdered by his rival Satyavan. In a bid to avenge his killing, they targeted Amit, as he was related to Satyavan".

After killing Amit, Sombir also made a failed attempt to kill Amit's uncle Sudhir. Later, Sombir and his associates went underground. Following Amit's murder, the Delhi and Haryana Police announced a reward of Rs 50, 000 and Rs 25,000 respectively for Sombir's arrest.

The Special Cell team began investigating the case and soon received inputs that Sombir would come to the PVC Market to meet his associates. A trap was set and he was nabbed. Search is on for his associates.
