Debendra Kapri, a taxi driver by profession, travels around the city working at odd hours, and does not manage to make even Rs 9,000. After dropping a passenger at central Delhi's Paharganj area on Wednesday evening, he decided to take a break and clean the window panes of his car when he noticed a backpack lying inside.

He opened the backpack and was stunned for a second as he found gold jewellery, a laptop, one Apple iPhone, a camera and $70 — all valued over Rs 8 lakh.

He could have left with the bag but instead, he decided to return the contents of the bag to the police. Kapri walked into the IGI Domestic Airport Police Station and handed itover.

"He had already looked into the contents of the bag. He could have fled but he decided to return it," said Sanjay Bhatia, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) IGI, astounded by Kapri's honesty.
Sanjay was informed about the incident by his SHO. "The SHO had takena stock of all the belongings. Some important documents were also found inside the bag," said Bhatia.

While speaking to Millennium Post, Kapri said,

"The minute I found the bag I decided to return it to the owner. But then I did not know where he was staying in Paharganj. So I decided to go to the police."

In fact, when the police was going through the contents of the bag, Kapri stood watch and made sure that all the items were accounted for.

The police managed to trace the owner after they found a wedding card with a mobile number, inside the bag.

"The call was picked up by a Srinagar-based resident, who was a relative of the owner.

The owner later turned up at the police station and reclaimed his belongings," said the official.

Taking stock of his display of honesty, the police have decided to award Rs 5,000 to the Good Samaritan.
