The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) recommended registration of an FIR against Safdarjung Hospital on a complaint by a woman who alleged that she had delivered twins but was handed over only one baby by the hospital authorities.

As evidence, the complainant submitted her ultrasound report conducted at a polyclinic centre. The polyclinic confirmed that as per ultrasound, the woman was carrying twin foetuses.

The Commission found prima facie evidence substantiating the woman's allegations and ordered registration of an FIR. It issued notices to Safdarjung Hospital, the polyclinic centre and SHO, Safdarjung Enclave regarding the issue.

Meanwhile, the hospital denied the allegations levelled by the woman. The woman's delivery took place at the hospital on January 22.
In an inquiry set up by the Commission into the matter against Safdarjung Hospital, the polyclinic centre and the concerned police station, DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal wrote to Taj Hassan, Special Commissioner of Police, Crime, mentioning the replies from the above-mentioned three parties.

Safdarjung Hospital stated that a departmental inquiry was conducted, which concluded that the woman had delivered a single baby. Safdarjung Enclave police station informed the Commission that they had conducted an inquiry and interacted with the hospital staff regarding the case.

However, the polyclinic centre verified both to the Commission as well as police that the complainant was carrying twin foetuses.

DCW has recommended a detailed investigation by the Crime Branch into the matter. The Commission requested that action be taken by March 5.
