NEW DELHI: Braving rain and chill, hundreds of women walked with Delhi Commission for Women Chief Swati Maliwal in various parts of West Delhi as she continued her Mahila Suraksha Padyatra across Delhi for the seventh day. After covering East, North East and Outer Delhi, the Mahila Suraksha Yatra on Saturday covered areas like Peeragarhi, Paschim Vihar, Khayala, Tilak Nagar, Janakpuri and Dabri.

The DCW on the 7th day of its march as part of a campaign to ensure women safety observed that drugs, liquor menace and domestic violence as the key issues faced by the women mostly in the slums and unauthorised colonies.

"Every day we are walking more than 30 km but it's not tiring for me mentally because when I am meeting women and listening to their stories. We are getting huge support from the people and they come to us to share various complaints," Maliwal told Millennium Post.

As per the data available with the Commission, of the 15698 cases of domestic violence in which FIR has been registered, the charge-sheet has been filed only in 5573 cases, which is a dismal 35.5%. Over 64.5% such cases are pending investigation with police, of which hundreds are pending for the last 5 years.

The data showing severe pendency validates the complaints of women pertaining to cases of domestic violence that do not figure in the priority list of the police.

Seeking redressal for genuine victims of domestic violence, the Commission has directed the police to provide the details of cases (u/s 498A, 406 IPC) where investigation is pending since 2012 in each district, with reasons for non-filing of charge-sheet/final report, status report of the case and the expected date by which charge-sheet/final report shall be filed in the Court.
