After three men boozed up on alcohol, took turns to rape a woman and later kill her along with her lover in the fields of Madanpur Dabas, the local police had arrested the raped woman's husband.
The Outer District police had claimed that her husband had found out about his wife's extra marital affair and thus killed them both by strangulating them. They had produced evidence for the same, however the Crime Branch was not satisfied with the evidence and knew that something was amiss.
A team from Crime Branch investigated the case when they found that the women's husband was not involved in the murder of Pooja (name changed) and Arun. The investigators cracked the case on Wednesday and arrested the three men: Jasbir Dabas, Devender and Manjeet from several locations in Outer Delhi.
"The accused had fled from the area around a month ago. ASI Priyavrit had received information that the three men were involved in a gangrape-cum-murder case. Based on the inputs, several teams were formed and all the accused were nabbed," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) G Ram Gopal Naik.
The trio had told the investigators that on 19 February they had found Pooja and Arun sitting in fields of Madanpur Dabas. The accused, in an inebriated condition, decided to rob the couple. After assaulting Arun, they took turns to rape the woman. Later, they decided to kill them both to conceal their crime. "Both the bodies were dumped in different locations to mislead the police," Naik added.
Pooja's body was found near a pond at Meer Vihar, while Arun's body was found on 20 February from a canal, located a few metres away from the murder spot.
