It was a victory of sorts for citizen's power in Gurugram on Friday.

Protesting over setting up of CNG station in proximity to residential neighbourhood, residents of Sispal Vihar and South City 2 were finally rewarded after the construction of CNG pump was stopped by the city authorities.

The residents who protested over the move of setting up of CNG station for over a month had intensified their protest over last three days.

The residents highlighted that opening of the CNG station in the area would amount to massive traffic jams along with causing safety hazards to the citizens.

"The road on which they were planning to set up the CNG pump station is a very narrow road. With huge demand of CNG in the city, it would have caused massive traffic jams in the area. Also, the opening of the CNG station would have affected the safety and security of the residents," said Colonel (Retd.)  Raghvendra Malik, resident of Sispal Vihar who was one of the protestors.

"Most of the residents were forced to come on roads and protest after the public authorities gave us cold shoulder despite repeated complaints. It is good to realise that the citizen power has triumphed and has forced the authorities to stop the setting up of the CNG station," Col. (Retd.) Malik added. Recently most of the citizens in the recent past have come on the streets and protested over the civic woes being faced by them.

Among the major issues where citizen groups have held protests are issues of opening of liquor vends in the residential areas, poor maintenance of the colonies and poor power and water supply situation in their neighbourhoods.

"There is rising awareness among the residents of their rights," said Ritu Sachdeva of Sushant Lok.
