CM Rekha Gupta proposes renaming Old Delhi Railway Station to honour Maharaja Agrasen
New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has written to the Union Railway Ministry, proposing that the iconic Old Delhi Railway Station be renamed as Maharaja Agrasen Railway Station, in tribute
to the ancient Indian ruler known for his ideals of equality, peace, and prosperity.
In a formal letter to Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw dated June 19, Gupta urged the Centre to consider the renaming as a tribute that reflects the sentiments of lakhs of Delhiites. Maharaja Agrasen, considered the legendary founder of the Agrawal community, is widely respected across northern India, especially in Delhi, where his contributions are seen as symbolic of fairness, non-violence, and social harmony.
“I am writing to respectfully request your kind consideration for renaming the Old Delhi Railway Station in honour of Maharaja Agrasen,” Gupta said in the letter. “His legacy has had a profound impact on the socio-economic development of India, particularly in Delhi.”
Describing the gesture as more than symbolic, Gupta stated that it would reflect the city’s gratitude towards a ruler who championed economic self-reliance and community welfare. “Renaming the station as Maharaja Agrasen Railway Station would serve as a fitting tribute to his enduring contributions,” she added, noting that the proposed name would “deeply resonate with the sentiments of millions of Delhi residents who hold him in the highest esteem.”
The Chief Minister ended her appeal with a personal request to the Railway Minister, saying, “I would be truly
grateful for your personal intervention in facilitating favourable and expeditious consideration of this proposal by your esteemed ministry.”
The Old Delhi Railway Station, also known as Delhi Junction, is the oldest railway station in the capital. Built in 1864, the station was modelled in red sandstone to echo the nearby Red Fort and remains a central node in the country’s northern rail network. It has 18
platforms, including two capable of handling double-length trains of 24 coaches.
