Cannabis peddling: NCB registered 83 cases in Delhi

The National Capital has become the den of drug addicts, states statistics. Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has registered around 83 cases in the last two years in the national capital. Also, it was observed that there is a flow of Cannabis from Nepal to Delhi and to surrounding areas.

According to the data by the NCB, 21 cases has been recorded in 2016 and nine till March 12, 2017.  While in the year 2015, NCB has registered 53 cases in Delhi. "On the basis of seizures of drugs in Delhi by NCB, it is observed that there is a flow of Cannabis from Nepal to Delhi and its surrounding land routes. Also, there is the presence of drug trafficking in Delhi to various countries via parcel and human carrier. However, it cannot be concluded that Delhi is becoming a transit hub for international drug smugglers," said a senior official.

 Various steps have been taken by the concerned authorities to curb drug trafficking.  These also include intensive preventive and interdiction efforts along known drug routes, strict surveillance. Also, increased international cooperation for exchange of information andinvestigative assistance in administering control over the movement  of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, training programmes for law enforcement officials for upgrading their skills to combating drug menace, sharing of real-time information and coordination operation with Nodal agencies of neighbouring countries and empowerment of Border Security Force, Sashastra Seema Bal and Coast Guard under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for making interdiction of narcotic drugs and to prevent smuggling of the same.  Over the years, owing to accessibility and relative anonymity, Delhi has become a transit point for international drug peddlers.  Sources said, presently there are three big hubs of heroin — southwest Asia, Southeast Asia and India.
