New Delhi: A security guard of a cash van fought bravely with the armed robbers and averted the heist of Rs 4-5 crore in Mayur Vihar. Despite being shot in the neck by the robbers, the brave man forced the armed assailants to return empty-handed. The stiff resistance by the guard Bishambar gave some time to the custodian to call the police. Had the cash van guard Bishambar not made the brave attempt, the cash distribution and management company BRINKS would have lost Rs 4 to 5 crore that was kept in three boxes in the cash van.
The incident happened at around 10 pm on Monday when the cash was being transported from Janakpuri office in Delhi to its Noida office.
According to the custodian of the cash van, they were intercepted by a Scorpio as soon as they reached DND road. "After crossing the DND road and the toll tax towards Noida link road, a Scorpio tried to overtake our vehicle, Our driver gave the way but it brushed past our cash van and the driver of the Scorpio forced us to stop. Later, a boy came out with a pistol and asked us to come out of the cash van," said Sandeep Kumar, the custodian.
Sensing trouble, the guard came out with his gun and challenged the man with the pistol. After some verbal exchanges, the man opened fire at the guard. He was shot behind the ear. Though the guard collapsed on the ground, the brave effort of the guard gave enough time to the custodian to run on the other side of the road and make a PCR call.
Suddenly some men from another vehicle Nissan Sunny trailing the van came down and fired at the cash van lock. However, with an injured guard and a custodian making PCR calls at some distance, the robbers panicked and fled without the boxes leaving the cash intact. They also left behind their Nissan car and fled towards Mayur Vihar in the Scorpio.
The guard Bishamber, a resident of Kanpur in UP has been admitted in the Dharamshila hospital in New Ashok Nagar where is condition is said to be serious.
"We are checking the CCTV footage and have certain leads. The registration of the car is also being checked. We cannot rule out the possibility of internal hand and hence we would be questioning all who knew the amount of cash in the van and the route of the cash van," said a senior police officer.
