Gurugram: In yet another crime in the city, a bookie was shot dead by unknown assailants in the middle of busy traffic here on Friday, police said.
A police officer investigating the case said, Vijay Batra, famously known as Tantrik in the Gurugram betting circle, was driving in his SUV on busy Sohna Road area when a few unidentified assailants fired shots at him.
He died on the spot, police said, adding that he sustained bullets injuries in his back and head. Batra, a resident of Park View-1 society in Sohna road, was a prominent bookie in the city. The incident took place just a few meters away from his residence.
The family of the deceased claimed that he was murdered by the henchmen of Kaushal gang and said he had been a target of the dreaded gangster as he had amassed huge fortunes through betting in various games.
The men from the Kaushal gang, according to the family, got in touch with Batra last year and began asking for extortion money of Rs 25 lakh from him. After his refusal to pay the amount he began receiving threatening messages from the gangster's men from November last year.
The anger towards police, of not being able to protect their member from Kaushal gang, even led to the family blocking the Sohna road for a while on Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, police suspected that the crime might have also been carried out by those aggrieved parties who have had a difference with Batra regarding the payment of money made from the profits of betting.
