Bid to minimise burden of carrying heavy school bags

New Delhi: Students are often seen lurching under the weight of their bag while going to schools. In a bid to reduce burden of school bags, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has come up with a report. The child rights body prepared the report which claimed that from class 1 to 5, there should be only one book per month including all the subjects. Also, the weight of the pages of school books should be less in order to bring down the burden of the school bags.

Millennium Post accessed the 18-page report made by the child rights body which claimed that the schools will not pressurise parents to buy the book apart from NCERT and SCERT and the teachers who are teaching the students in higher standards should focus in providing more practical education instead of focusing more on books. "We have got many complaints from the parents after which we formed the report which will be sent to concerned Ministry," said an NCPCR official.

An official claimed that to earn more money from the parents, books are printed on the hard or glossy papers which simply increase the weight of the books and the bag as well. "The books should be printed in normal papers so that it will decrease bag's weight," added the official. Some study materials, for example, periodic tables should be provided by the school; there is no need to purchase extra books. "Few things like tables can be painted on school walls so that children can learn," added the official. He further claimed that the study materials provided by the school should be kept in the school.

For the children from class I-V, there should be only one book which will contain the routine of every subject which to be taught in one month.

"In the year, there will be 12 books and the kids will bring one book every month according to their routine," said Priyank Kanoongo, a senior official from NCPCR. He further added that NCERT should also provide model time-table to the schools. The children should also be taught about the posture of carrying school bags. Other stakeholders told the commission their views which was proper drinking water should be available in the classes.
