New Delhi: The Thyagraj Stadium came alive with innovative teaching methods as Delhi Education minister Atishi and MCD Mayor Shelly Oberoi inaugurated the two-day State Level Exhibition on ‘Teaching Learning Materials’ (TLM) for pre-primary and primary classes on Thursday.

The event, organised by SCERT Delhi, witnessed the participation of nearly 300 teachers from Delhi government schools, MCD schools, and the Delhi Board of School Education.

The exhibition featured inventive ideas from teachers using eco-friendly materials and waste items to make learning more interactive and enjoyable. Among the innovative models, a ‘magic table’ by a teacher from Sarvodaya Co-Ed Bal Vidyalaya stood out, providing an alternate approach to memorising mathematical tables.

Another highlight was a model from Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, where children create English words while playing with alphabet rolls.

The event showcased a diverse array of TLM designed to enhance foundational skills in the early years, ranging from playful toys to specific manipulatives for numeracy and counting. These models spanned subjects such as English, Hindi, Math, History, and Geography, aiming to dispel subject-related fears among students. The Education Minister and Mayor encouraged educators to embrace these ideas and craft dynamic learning experiences for their students.

The TLM on display were chosen through district-level competitions, representing each of Delhi’s 15 districts.

Addressing the gathering, Atishi emphasised the significance of varied teaching-learning materials for children at the foundational stage. She stressed that children absorb knowledge more effectively through engaging multiple senses and hands-on experiences.

“At the heart of this exhibition lies the understanding that primary and pre-primary teachers are the architects of future learning capabilities,” Atishi said. She also highlighted the role of these educators in laying the groundwork for students’ intellectual growth.

She emphasised the need to create vibrant and captivating classrooms that foster a love for learning. While the Mayor echoed Atishi’s sentiments, underlining the impact of innovative teaching methods on student attendance and cognitive retention.
