New Delhi: As election around the corner, the city police had seized more than 12,000 unclaimed vehicles lying on different parts of the street in the city. The investigating agency said that the move was also a part of anti-terrorist measures.
The Delhi Police data accessed by Millennium Post revealed that from January 1 to April 14, 2019) as many as 12,622 unclaimed vehicles were seized in Delhi.
Sources said that around 3,283 vehicles were seized in the South East Delhi whereas 1,110 unclaimed vehicles were seized in Outer Delhi. From North Delhi-324 vehicles, Central-288, North West-671, Outer North-1027, Rohini-418 vehicles were seized.
The sources further added that in the New Delhi area, as many as 124 vehicles were seized whereas from South West Delhi, 803 vehicles were seized.
From other districts East-615, Shahdara- 607, North East-427, South-1150, Dwarka-718, West-1,009 vehicles were seized. The two units to city police Railways and IGIA seized 48 vehicles.
Sources added that during a crime review meeting, held in April, the Commissioner of Police had reviewed the anti-terrorist measures taken by districts and units.
"The Delhi Police had also heightened their patrolling for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. They are making sure that no suspicious vehicles lie on the road," sources added.
According to police, after taking vehicles to the police station, they wait for the owner to visit them for his or her vehicle. "If no person come to us, we, with the help of chassis number details, try to reach the owner," added officer. The investigating agency also shared the details of vehicles in Zipnet (Zonal Integrated Police Network).
"In many occasion, we found that the vehicle was stolen from some other place and after committing the crime, the accused left the vehicle in another district," said police adding that people also complained about the unattended vehicles through social media in which action is taken.The Delhi Police Annual Report of 2018, last year, 44,158 motor vehicle theft reported as against 39,084 cases in the year 2017.
Among the stolen vehicles, 32,984 (74.70 per cent) were two-wheelers, 8036 (18.20 per cent) cars and 3138 (7.11 per cent) other vehicles.
"As many as 4619 (10.46 per cent) stolen vehicles were recovered and 6,751 auto lifters were arrested," added the report.
