In a symbolic act of showing their support to the promise of abolition of house tax, resident welfare associations (RWA) in the national Capital and Aam Aadmi Party volunteers will join hands on Saturday will observe 'House Tax Mukti Diwas'.

Party workers and Delhi residents will be seen burning copies of house tax bills issued by the three Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Municipal Corporations to observe the day. The event is being seen as a part of AAP's campaign for the civic polls.

"After receiving the news from several RWAs and areas about residents burning their house tax bills in anticipation of AAP's victory in the MCD elections, the party has decided to take this drive on a massive scale on Saturday," noted a party spokesperson.

AAP Delhi unit convener Dilip Pandey said: "All ward units and volunteers of the party will join the activities of House Tax Mukti Diwas on Saturday, to celebrate the end of house taxes after AAP comes to power in MCDs. People are confident that just the way the AAP government waived water bills and cut electricity bills by half, after Arvind Kejriwal's announcement, even the house tax promise will be fulfilled."

Across the city, nearly 40 RWAs burnt their inflated house tax bills in last two days. Rajendra Nagar RWA president Jagdish Bhalla said the burning of bills was also a symbolic protest against the corruption that the BJP has spread in the Municipal Corporations.

"The party is buoyed by the fantastic response that the house tax waiver promise is receiving across Delhi. Delhi expects the AAP to win MCD polls and get a reprieve from house tax from next year onwards," Bhalla said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had promised abolition of residential house tax and waiver of arrears if voted to power in MCD. He has contended that house tax is a "major source of corruption".
