3 cops suspended, Crime Branch to probe violence

In the aftermath of the violence witnessed in Ramjas College and Maurice Nagar police station in which scores of students and journalists were beaten up and the police was blamed for their incompetence in dealing with the protests, three Delhi Police personnel were suspended on Thursday.

Speaking about the case, Joint Commissioner of Police (South West), Deependra Pathak said: "Certain allegations were made that some police officers for their inappropriate and unprofessional act. The senior officers from North District have identified three policemen, who allegedly have behaved inappropriately or unprofessionally. They have been placed under suspension." The three suspended officials are — Constable Vinod, Head Constable Raghunath and Constable Sachin. The police have claimed that they will look into the various evidences like the video tapes from mobile phones to ascertain the allegation of misconduct.

The case has now been transferred to the Crime Branch who will now investigate the case. When Pathak was asked if the allegation that the ABVP members attack had police complicity, he said: "This is a matter of investigation. All the complaints have been received and we are looking into it". The main bone of contention in Thursday's protest was the filing of a separate FIR against the one lodged on Wednesday night against unknown persons. The protesters had claimed that the FIR filed has shifted the blame onto them rather than the ABVP cadres and had not taken their complaints into consideration. Citing a Supreme Court judgment that multiple FIRs can be lodged in a single case, they put forth their demands in front of the Delhi Police.

However, the police did not relent to their demands and stuck with the original FIR but had also taken the 20 odd complaints into consideration.
The police have tried to assure the students that their safety was the utmost priority for them. "Assure all students & their parents that Delhi Police will keep 24x7 arrangements in & around North Campus for normal university functioning," tweeted Delhi Police Commissioner, Amulya Patnaik.
