New Delhi: One of the main reasons behind the increase in motor vehicle thefts is unmanned parking in the city which is the soft target for the auto-lifters. The Delhi Police during an analysis found that over 200 cases of auto-lifting were reported from parking areas and they have also sent letters to concerned agencies regarding the issue. According to the Delhi Police data, in 2017, one of the police stations in Dwarka district received 334 cases of motor vehicle thefts in which around 143 cases were reported from the parking areas of four metro stations Dwarka, Sector-14, Sector-13 and Sector-14 in the blue line.

"It is clear that the metro stations parking is the soft target for criminals and auto lifters as the same had less security," said police sources. In 2018 till June, around 189 cases of MV theft was reported in which 100 were reported from the same four metro stations as from Dwarka-11 cases were reported whereas around 51 cases from sector 14. "Around 14 vehicles were stolen from sector 13 while 24 cases of MV theft reported from sector 12," said the police data.

The Delhi Police time to time writes to the concerned agencies regarding the deployment of security guards to manage parking areas. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police also focussed on the sensitization of caretakers for which they also wrote a letter to the agency. The law police want that the concerned person guarding the areas should have proper details of the vehicle standing in the parking for a long time and if caretaker found something suspicious they should inform the concerned agency.

Sometimes unwillingness of a majority of motor vehicle owners to install anti-auto theft equipment is one of the major contributing factors to motor vehicle theft.
