New Delhi: As many as 1,368 CCTV cameras in Delhi are non-functional in different parts of the city. The reasons were found to be damages caused by the third party including other government bodies, due to theft and non-maintenance of the CCTVs by firm.
Police sources told Millennium Post that Provisioning and Logistics unit of the city police has written to districts and other units regarding fortnightly dairy of non-functional CCTV cameras installed by one firm in phases for the fortnight ending May 15.
"The information provided by the company shows that out of 3,870 installed CCTV cameras, as many as 1,368 cameras are non-functional," sources said quoting letter content.
Sources further added that around 445 was non-functional due to non maintenance, 855 cameras are not working due to damages caused by the third party including five government bodies. 68 issues were found pending with districts (LCS/MCS burnt or under shifting, theft of equipment etc).
Sources told that in East Delhi, equipment of few cameras were stolen whereas in south district, problems like non-finalisation of location, non-replacement of batteries found.
DCsP of user districts were told to take necessary steps as per guidelines of standing order 397/2010 and contract agreement of Phase-1 CCTV project so that these CCTV cameras could be made functional.
"In view of facts, all (district units) are requested to take necessary action immediately to make the cameras system installed fully functional, through the contractual firm for optimum utilisation," said sources quoting letter.
In the letter, instructions were given to prevent third-party damage and to restore the damage.
The instructions read that SHO will ensure that the area staff are fully acquainted with the physical location and layout of the deployed equipment and that, they regularly check the same so as to prevent theft and damage.
SHO will liaise closely with the land owning agencies, other stake holders so that the cables and other equipment do not get damaged during diggings, repairs. Few years back, city police had sent a letter to Joint Commissioner of Police ranges regarding cases pertains to third party damage occurred in CCTV system installed by the firm.
