The home minister asked both chief ministers Tarun Gogoi of Assam and TR Zeliang of Nagaland to take all precaution to restore normalcy in the region. He asked them to take administrative and security measures to deal with the law and order situation.
A home ministry statement quoted Rajnath Singh as saying that the central government would provide assistance to the two states and help rehabilitate people displaced from their homes following mob violence.
‘Curfew has been imposed in Golaghat and Rongajan. Army help has been sought to conduct flag march,’ Golaghat district SP Siladitya Chetia said.
One person was killed and 18 others, including three women, were injured when police lathicharged protesters and opened fire in the Rongajan on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Tarun Gogoi blamed the union home minister for the violence along the state’s border with Nagaland. Gogoi said the Centre has failed to provide security in the border region.
‘Yes, I am responsible as the state CM for what is happening along the border. But why are you not blaming Rajnath Singh? Why are same charges not being made against the union home minister for failing to give protection?’ Gogoi said.
The Assam-Nagaland border, he said, is a disputed subject and the area is controlled by the Centre with the help of CRPF, a ‘neutral’ force which failed to provide security to the people and
properties there.
But the Centre, he said, is not taking the issue seriously at all. ‘It is a very serious issue but the way they are handling it, is not serious.’
He condemned the police action against protesters at Rangajan area of Golaghat district on Tuesday and said the government will order an inquiry by additional chief secretary Subhash Chandra Das into the incident that left 22 civilians and seven police personnel injured.
