Delhi traffic cop beaten up by lawyer

According to police, the incident happened at around 10.30 am on Tuesday. Head constable Santosh had intercepted the 29-year-old lawyer’s car when it was seen approaching from the wrong side towards Gate 5 of the court. On being stopped, the lawyer got down from his car and allegedly started slapping and punching the head constable. During the scuffle, the traffic official’s uniform was also torn apart.

The violent confrontation between the traffic official and the lawyer was pacified by the crowd, and the lawyer went inside the court.

‘After a while, the traffic constable reported the matter to the police post within the court premises and the lawyer was immediately summoned there,’ said Vikramjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer). After hours of enquiry, an FIR was registered against the lawyer under Section 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of IPC. However, no arrest was made till evening, said a police official. He further informed that Virender Sangwan is an advocate at the Rohini court in Delhi.

In May this year, two men and a woman lawyer from North-East were allegedly beaten up by a group of lawyers at Tis Hazari in Delhi.

Eye-witnesses claimed that one of them were allegedly beaten up in front of a judge. What apparently sparked the incident by the alleged molestation of a North-East woman by a lawyer near Delhi University.
