Finally, Delhiites can toss a 'tagline' back at Keralaites' when they go God's Own Country. Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) is looking for a tagline that will become inseparable from the identity of Delhi in the coming years.
Officials from the department said that in June, Delhi will have its own tagline. For the past one month, department had urged citizens of India to think of something snappy – no longer than three to four words – and send their entries in English.
DTTDC PRO, Sudhir Sobti said, 'We are looking for a tagline, which describes our city that has it all. The tagline should capture the essence of Delhi and inspire travellers to visit the city. 9 May is the last date for sending the entries.'
According to the department, the tagline will work wonders for Delhi tourism as it did for Kerala state, which capitalised 'God's Own Country'.
Kerala was the first Indian state to come up with a tagline in 1989.
The tagline caught the imagination of many tourists and the state became a tourist hotspot in a few years.
Officials said that all the taglines are in a sealed envelope and are kept in a sealed box. Around six senior officials from the department will form a committee to judge the tagline. The tagline's copyright would remain with DTTDC.
Sources in the government said that a tagline is just the beginning of a more aggressive marketing campaign to change the perception about the capital.
'Delhi is already a tourist destination, but we want to promote the city in a better way,' said an official.
Experts from Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and artistic background will scrutinise around 5,000 taglines, which Delhi Tourism received over the past one month.
Speaking to Millennium Post, General Manager DTTDC Vinay Bhushan said, 'The response was overwhelming. History, culture, diversity and modernity in a tagline will be most important criteria to judge that will use by us for publicity of our city.'
The department has also announce the winning entries to get both recognition and cash prize.
First entry will receive Rs 50,000, the second Rs 30,000 and the third Rs 15,000.
