Delhi to get 2nd BRT corridor

Update: 2012-09-19 02:25 GMT
Amid high controversy surrounding Delhi government’s Bus Rapid Transit [BRT] system, Delhi government on Tuesday decided to come up with its second BRT corridor in north-east Delhi.

At a high-level meeting on Tuesday, which was convened by chief minister Sheila Dikshit, the government decided that the corridor will be between Karawal Nagar and Gandhi Nagar, and Bhajanpura to Mori Gate.

After first BRT in south Delhi, the proposed north-east Delhi project would cost around Rs 392 crore for around 18 km.

At present, one pilot project on BRT [Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand Flyover] is under operation.

After the meeting, an official said, ‘In this second corridor, around Rs 222 crore will be spent on the corridor and around Rs 10 crore on bus stops’.

Earlier, the corridor was proposed to have closed bus stand, but now it will have open bus stands, which would have ticket dispensing facilities, so that commuters can buy tickets even before  boarding the bus.

Around 70 per cent of office-goers in these areas travel by bus and transport observers say there is a dire need of a BRT corridor system.

Sources said after Delhi High Court’s recent order that BRT design and concept is not bad, Delhi government has initiated the process of execution of another one.

Delhi Integrated Multi Model Transit System [DIMTS], a nodal agency, gave a detailed presentation before Chief Minister on the proposed stretches on Tuesday.

Sources said 14 new BRT projects are being examined for implementation.

Detailed Project Report [DPR] for this second BRT was ready in 2009 and has been modified after suggestions from UTTEPEC.
