Delhi police suspends three brutal constables

Update: 2014-01-25 00:53 GMT
‘Early morning, I read your report on the brutality of Delhi police officials and watched the video on YouTube. I immediately informed Sindhu Pillai, deputy police commissioner (North) to identify these policemen and instructed her to immediately suspend all three constables,’ Deepak Mishra, special commissioner of police (law and order) told this reporter.

He added, ‘We have suspended all the three constables posted at Kotwali police station who have been identified as Jitender, Arvind and Saurav for beating a man who was caught red-handed for pick-pocketing.’ The brutal act was captured on the camera for around 5.54 minutes.

‘On 12 January, they were posted near Lal Qila. In the afternoon, the man who was later seen getting thrashed by the police officers, was caught red-handed while trying to pick pocket. The man who caught him handed him over to the three policemen as he refused to file a complaint against him,’ Pillai said.

Surprisingly, the Delhi police also did not insist on a complaint and the three constables released him after beating him up brutally. They recovered the stolen wallet and returned it.

In the 5.54-minute video recording done by one Kapil Kumar, the three constables were seen brutally beating the man with wooden sticks after striping him in a public place. All three policemen were  taking turns to thrash him. At some stage, the cops stripped him of his trousers and thrashed him.

On Friday afternoon, after this reporter sent a text to AAP minister Manish Sisodia about the story, the video got viral on social networking websites and was also put up on Aam Aadmi Party’s Facebook page.
