The view that Delhi may be sitting on a minefield of radioactive waste was expressed at a seminar on environmental safety on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, AD Bhatt, Chairperson of National Convention of Chemical Weapon said: “Six years after the radiation leak of cobalt 60 at the Mayapuri scrapyard, there is no way yet to detect radiation in the waste market.”
Bhatt was speaking in a symposium on Environmental and Harmonious Development, organised by the Shyam Lal College (SLC) of the Delhi University at India International Center (IIC).
“Lack of general awareness among people may invite bigger calamity in case of even a small incident of chemical warfare or spill of radioactive waste,” Bhatt added.
Key speaker, RK Sharma, a member scientist of INMAS and DRDO, Professor Rabi Narayan Kar, Principal Shyam Lal College and the students from various colleges attended the event.
