The Delhi government will spend Rs 520 crore in the next couple of months to re-lay the roads that were taken over by it from MCD due to poor maintenance. PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the government has decided to start re-laying over 700 km of road length at the earliest.

‘The government has decided to spend Rs 520 crore on strengthening the roads,’ he said. Unhappy with MCD’s poor maintenance of roads, the government had, in December last year, decided to take over 674 streets with a total length of 802 km from it.

Officials said most  roads will be re-laid and PWD will look after their maintenance. They said the contractors, after completion of re-laying work, will have to carry out their maintenance for a period of five years.

The total length of road network in city is more than 31,000 km, of which MCD maintains around 27,000 km.
