Protesters from different students, women and political groups on Monday laid a siege of the residence of Home Minister for the government’s failure to ensure safety for women especially in light of the rape of a woman passenger by the driver of a taxi operated by a multi-national company.
The police meanwhile, in a kneejerk reaction, banned Uber, the multi-national taxi service, from operating in the national Capital. Gagan Bhatia, in-charge of Uber’s operations in India, was interrogated during the day by the police regarding the company’s operations and its policies, said a senior police official. Meanwhile, Delhi Police, with egg on its face, has also claimed that the police verification of the accused was forged.
In addition, the Centre is contemplating to ban the cab services of Uber across India. The Home Ministry is planning to ask all state governments and administration of nine union territories, where Uber runs its cab services, to put a ban on it, official sources said on Monday. Uber cab services are available in Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Kolkata and Pune.
The central government is also likely to ask all state governments and UT administrations to find out whether similar app-based taxi service is running in their jurisdiction contrary to the existing rules and regulations, the sources said. Rajnath Singh is expected to make a statement to this effect in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday where he may mention about the steps to be taken for regulating the app- based cab services.
According to sources, some MPs also demanded removal of Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Delhi police commissioner B S Bassi to save the image of party in the election bound national capital city. “I demanded the Home Minister to fix responsibility in the case and take necessary action,” Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel, told Millennium Post. . “It’s a matter of probe why there was no patrolling in the area which is woman was raped,” said Goel. North-East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari said action should be taken not only against the driver, but also those responsible for security lapses.
“We met Rajnath Singh and discussed how to improve the safety of women. There should be zero-tolerance against this issue. We want an early result in the case. Looking at the ‘Nirbhaya’ case (of 16 December 2012), we also appeal to the courts to expedite rape cases at the earliest,” Tiwari said.
Meanwhile, Shiv Kumar Yadav, the accused driver, has been sent to police custody as it has come to light that his police verification report was forged. However, it’s also being said that the document may not be forged and police was saying so to clear itself of any responsibility in the matter
“The Delhi MPs met Home Minister Rajnath Singh today and raised the issue of the safety of women, in the wake of the recent rape incident,” Pravesh Verma, West Delhi MP told media persons outside the Parliament. The Home Minister also made a statement on the floor of the House.
The MPs, however, avoided to mention their demand of removal of L-G and Police commissioner but senior leaders of the party are discussing the removal as possible remedy to save the image of the city administration which is under Central Government. “The removal of L-G is in our agenda since long. I think the crime under the president rule has increased alarmingly and the government must have to improve the situations before going to polls,” said a senior BJP leader.

International mobile cab-booking company, Uber, which has been banned by the Delhi government after one of its drivers was arrested on charges of raping a woman, had in the past got into trouble with the German government for violating the country’s laws.
