Coming down heavily on drunk driving but taking a lenient view of the first-time offender, a Delhi court has said that innocent people have lost their life on the road because of vehicles being driven by persons under the influence of alcohol.

The court made this remarked, while convicting a man, Brij Bhan Singh, who was caught driving under the influence of alcohol on 6 May, at Maya Enclave.

Metropolitan magistrate Santosh Kumar Singh called such drivers as a menace to society saying that such people did not respect the life of innocent people who either drove small vehicles or those simply walking on the road. A breath analysis test was conducted on the accused, which reported blood alcohol levels of 386.7 mg/100ml.

‘Persons who drive the vehicle under inebriated conditions do not respect the traffic rules and rule of law, which are essential to regulate a civil society’, the court said.

The court, however, observing that the accused is first-time offender, with a family comprising of three school-going children, took a lenient view and awarded him a sentence till rising of the court (TRC), with a fine of Rs. 1500. The court urged that every citizen is duty bound to obey traffic rules.
